Georgian gastronomy bloggers and cookbook authors Katy and Acho live in a traditional Tbilisi house that was constructed in the 18th-century. By day, Katy is an economist and Acho is a lawyer, but at night and on weekends they relax by spending time in the kitchen, exploring the diverse flavors and techniques of traditional Georgian cooking. They have taught Georgian cooking to foreign friends, regularly post cooking videos on their YouTube channel, and are now working on a project with the Ministry of Culture to promote Georgian gastronomy. They travel the country talking to home-cooks and gathering old recipes, which will all be published in a forthcoming cookbook on Georgian heritage. Georgian cuisine reflects the country’s geographical position, with tastes and influences from its neighbors and distinct regions within the country. Katy and Acho will introduce you to a variety of Georgian dishes, robustly flavored with herbs like tarragon, coriander, and other Georgian herbs, sour plums, variety of meat meals, and fresh breads cooked in a clay oven. Your menu might include khachapuri (dough stuffed with Georgian cheese), khinkali (meat dumplings with Georgian spices), chakapuli (a popular Georgian stew of lamb or veal flavored with onions, tarragon, tkemali (local sour plum sauce) and white wine), shkmeruli (chicken braised in cream and garlic), roasted potatoes, or Georgian tomato salad. For dessert they might serve a very traditional sweet called churchkhela made from walnuts or hazelnuts, covered in candied grape juice, served with with homemade lemonade, tea or coffee. If you book a cooking experience, learn to make an authentic Georgian meal with your own two hands, alongside Katy and Acho in their small but well-equipped kitchen. You can expect to cook together for about 1-2 hours, before sitting down to enjoy the meal you helped prepare at their dining table. Katy and Acho also offer an optional market tour add-on. Please note, pick-up and drop-off from the Marjanishvili Square Metro station is included in the cost of this experience. Katy & Acho can offer vegan and vegetarian dishes so be sure to let them know if you have any special dietary restrictions.
